ABOUT US

Housed in a two-storey building with ample grass and tarmac playing areas, including a football pitch and a basketball court, the school is set in pleasant urban surroundings of a spa town. It has seen many changes since its opening in 1969, and now offers 22 spacious classrooms, several smaller teaching areas, a well-stocked library, a school hall that doubles as a dining room and a well-equipped gymnasium used as a community facility out of hours. There are approximately 400 pupils aged 6 to 15, organised into 18 mixed ability classes. Teaching staff and support staff strive to provide a safe, stimulating and challenging learning environment. The rules that we have encourage responsibility, self-discipline, tolerance and respect.

Quality teaching that matches students’ stages of development and parental support are vital. Throughout the school year there are weekly consultation mornings and monthly afternoons for parents to discuss with teachers the progress and welfare of their children.

THE SCHOOL YEAR

The school year is divided into two terms with quite evenly spaced holiday periods, namely the autumn, New Year, winter, May Day and summer holidays. Term 1 starts on 1 September and ends on 31 January the following year, Term 2 lasts from 1 February to 24 June (15 June in Year 9).

There are several occasions in the year when parents are invited to joins us, for example New Year’s Performance, Sport & Fun, concerts or fieldwork days which, for this reason, take place in the evening or on a Saturday.

The school provides a wide range of elective subjects from which students in the last triennium, Years 7, 8 and 9, have to choose two periods per week. In addition, activity days such as sports days, fieldwork days; theatre outings and trips to various places of interest (occasionally abroad) are organised. Learning to swim, cycle and ski are also compulsory elements of the primary school curriculum.

The Extended Programme

The school also provides five-day field trips, extra classes, such as remedial and additional classes, numerous clubs and extra-curricular activities (sports, modern foreign languages, junior and senior choirs, Chemistry Club, Physics Club, Chess, etc.), services like pre-school care (in Year 1) and extended school day (in Years 1–5), all designed to meet the needs and interests of our pupils. These options are not obligatory.

THE NATIONAL EXAMINATION

All students in Years 6 and 9 are required to take the National Examination (national curriculum tests) in Slovene/mother tongue, Mathematics and English in Year 6, and Slovene/mother tongue, Mathematics and a third subject determined by the Minister of Education at the beginning of the academic year in Year 9.

HOMEWORK

Homework is essential to help students consolidate their knowledge, enhance their skills and develop their independent learning and responsibility. We expect that parents will encourage their children to give these tasks proper care and attention.

STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Extra care is given to students with special needs. They are worked with both in and out of the classroom on a one to one basis to ensure that they achieve the very best they can. Their progress is closely monitored and there is a regular interchange of information between teaching staff and their parents/carers.

GIFTED AND TALENTED STUDENTS

Gifted, talented and more able students are identified in subject areas. They receive the support and guidance they need to fulfil their potential. We aim to create opportunities to enrich their learning experience through differentiated tasks, extra-curricular activities, projects and competitions.

PEER MEDIATION

All students have access to support and assistance of teachers and counsellors. However, many low-level disputes can be dealt with by trained peer mediators who listen to the disagreeing students and encourage them to find ways of resolving the problems themselves. Mediation is part of an overall school anti-bullying policy.

SCHOOL MEALS

All meals (breakfast, snacks and lunch) are cooked on the premises. Alternative meals are provided for students with special dietary requirements (medical, cultural or religious). Children have access to drinking water from a water fountain in the hall, and are encouraged to bring water bottles to school.

TRANSPORT

Students will normally have free bus travel if their home is over four kilometres from school. Most students are brought to school by car, some cycle or walk.

SPORT

Promoting physical well-being is of utmost importance at Rogaška Slatina Primary School I. We have enjoyed an enviable record of sporting success in local, regional and national competitions. Basketball, football, athletics, skiing, snowboarding and bowling are all extremely popular.

PIKA POKA

Besides participating in several national and international programmes (Reading Literacy, Healthy School, Comenius, eTwinning, School Fruit Scheme, Healthy Lifestyle, etc.) our school hosts the annual national Pika Poka Folk Music and Dance Festival, which takes place in May. Its aim is to preserve and nurture appreciation of traditional folk music, song, dance and other traditions.
